It's a bug in VirtueMart 4.4.4:

Under the Product Images tab is a new option COM_VIRTUEMART_FILES_FORM_FILE_ISIMAGE that should be checked.
The checkbox should have been checked automatically, but it is not.
Temporary solution:
Check the checkbox for COM_VIRTUEMART_FILES_FORM_FILE_ISIMAGE yourself.
This needs to happen for any product you (want to) save. Existing / unchanged products are displayed correctly.
Note:
At this moment COM_VIRTUEMART_FILES_FORM_FILE_ISIMAGE is not translated yet. I added a translation to my language overrides. I translated it to "Is image"...
